Lost files

Due to the MegaUpload debacle, all files are unavailable until a new file host is found.

File hosts are shutting up shop on a daily basis so it is hard locating one that is both stable and reliable.

We hope to have this rectified in the near future.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Guy McDonough - My Place (1985)

On the anniversary tomorrow of the passing of Guy McDonough from Australian Crawl I am adding his post-humously released and long out of print, My Place album to the blog.

Guy McDonough was an Australian rock musician best known for playing rhythm guitar with the band Australian Crawl.
He played rhythm guitar and was lead vocals on two of their most well-known songs, "Oh No, Not You Again" and "Errol"*.
Guy McDonough's solo album, My Place, produced by brother (and previously, Crawl drummer), Bill McDonough, was recorded in 1984 and released in 1985 (Wheatley WRLP1010).
He died two years before Australian Crawl broke up, in 1984.
The above is a quote from Wikipedia:

Tracks on the My Place album include :-

My Place
Things Don't Seem
Who Said
Hook, Line & Sinker
Without You (It's A Lonely Life)
What's In It For Me
Can't Help Myself
Too Many People
Memory

Deni Hines - Imagination

I first met Deni Hines at The Perth Entertainment Centre in 1989, when I was at the venue in the afternoon to catch up with my old mate Jimmy Barnes during his sound check.

Jimmy called me over and there was this poor girl in obvious pain, smoking a rollie and limping.
He introduced Deni as his backing singer, saying she was the daughter of Marcia.... that was my intro.

Deni had slipped on the stage set during rehearsals that day and injured her ankle.  She has just arrived back at the Entertainment Centre after a visit to the hospital.

Like a true trouper, Deni went on to perform the show that evening and what a show it was.

I've always liked the quality in Deni's voice and still do to this day and always look for anything she has released.

This now deleted CD, Imagination was released in 1996 and was her first solo album.

Deni's Wikipedia page is located HERE.

Tracks on this release are :-
Like The Way
It's Alright
It's Not Over
Like A River
Yes We Can
Joy
Imagination
Go Slow
When A Woman Pretends
Personal
I'm Not In Love

Courtney Act - Rub Me Wrong (single)

I thought I'd follow up the Shannon Noll posting with another artist that was not a winner when he appeared on Australian Idol, but is still a strong performer to this day.

Courtney Act is the stage name of Australian artist, singer, "gender illusionist" & entertainer, Shane Janek.

Shane as himself did not get any further than the selection auditions but returned the next day in the persona of "Courtney Act" and went through to the semi-finals.

As Courtney his performance of the AC/DC classic, You Shook Me All Night Long brought the audience to it's feet.

Shane / Courtney is now a regular performer on the USA club circuit where he continues to slay the audiences wherever he / she plays.

Two sites of interest for further information on Courney Act can be found HERE on the Wikipedia site and also on Courtney's own website HERE.

Tracks on this CD single are :-

Rub Me Wrong

Shannon Noll - C'Mon Aussie C'Mon (single)

He may not have won Australian Idol 2003 but Shannon Noll has been one of the busiest members since his appearance in the well known TV competition.

I stumbled across this CD single at the Perth Record & CD Fair last weekend and thought it would make a good inclusion to the blog.

A history of Shannon Noll can be found HERE on Wikipedia.

Shannon also has his own website HERE with loads of information and touring dates.

It should be noted that the All Juiced Up album is not listed in the discography on the INXS  Wikipedia page at all.

Tracy Redhead - EP - Pre-Release copy (2003)

I have to admit I do love my endless trawls through the Op Shops of Perth in my endless quest for deleted and hard to find Australian music.   It's time for myself doing what I enjoy... preserving Australian music for the future.

Occasionally you come across some rare gems.

This pre-release copy of the first EP from performer Tracy Redhead and her band is one of those such gems.

It is obvious that this copy was never for public release and I am almost sure that it was given away by Tracy Redhead to friends, etc.

Girl Overboard / Separate Tables - Albums & Singles

These albums and singles cover most of the time that Melbourne band Girl Overboard were together.
Girl Overboard finally split in 1993.

I first met South African born, NZ raised vocalist, Lisa Schouw and Melbournian guitarist, Robin (Rob) Gist, from Girl Overboard when I was doing monitors for Little Heroes in 1981 / 82. They were in a band called Short Story and were our support act on several occassions.

The front of house guy at that time with Little Heroes was Ross Fraser, who went on to be involved in the Whispering Jack album by John Farnham. Ross was one of the songwriters and the producer of Whispering Jack and of many more bands and acts since then.

After leaving Little Heroes, I was offered the front of house gig with Short Story and spent the next 12 or so months working with them.

Short Story had a few residency's around Melbourne at the time... including The Chevron in St. Kilda Road and a popular Saturday arvo gig at The Prospect Hill in Kew. They were also a regular at Billboard.... in fact I worked with them there on a night that was supposed to be my "bucks night". I guess at the time I felt more inclined to work with bands than on my marriage.

Many people could hear this amazing voice on stage and were looking for the "bloke" who was singing. That was Lisa... she had one of the gutsiest voices I'd ever heard live.

After Short Story, the band wanted a more "graphic" name and became Separate Tables for awhile and then finally Girl Overboard. Lineup changes went along with each name change before finally settling on this recording version.

Some of the artists performing on the Paint A Picture album were, John Farnham, David Hirschfelder and Chris Wilson.

The tracks on the Paint A Picture CD are :-

The Love We Make
I Can't Believe
Some Things Never Change
In The Evening
When You Do
Permanent Friend
Tear It Down
Dreaming
Wrap Your Arms Around Me
Trouble
Come And Play
When The Word Came Down
Blue Falls The Rain

Lisa Schouw has a personal website HERE

Rob Gist now has his own recording studio in Sydney at ToneMaster Productions

Music Download Instructions

It has come to my attention that many people are not aware of how this and other music blogs function.

So, I am creating these instructions to make it easy.

Firstly, before anything you will need to download and install this software. This only has to be done ONCE... then when it is  installed on your computer you will be ready for the next step.   Instructions for similar software for a MAC is included below...

For Windows users you will need to download a program such as WinRAR.  This is a free program and a copy is available by clicking the following link.  WinRAR

If you have a MAC, then the program to unpack the files is Stuffit Expander and comes with your operating system.

If you can't locate Stuffit Expander then the following link will give you a free MAC application that will do the job quite well.   RAR Expander

At the bottom of each post on the blog there is a textual link.  Usually it will be the name of the band or of the title of the album. IT should be fairly obvious and on my blogs will always be at the bottom of the relevant post.

Simply click on that text link and it will open a link in another window.   That link will usually be to Megaupload but can sometimes be 4Shared.

In the top right corner of the Megaupload page there will be a series of  3 letters and 1 number to be typed into a box.  They are quite easy to locate.  Other bogs can use various sites like Rapidshare or Fileshare and numerous others.  They all work the same way.  Rapidshare and others will make you wait up to 15 minutes between each download.

That box will then give you a countdown timer of usually under 60 seconds.  This can vary.   Once the timer is finished then click on the download link.
The download of the "album"  will then commence.  The time for the actual download will depend on your connection speed to the internet.

The entire album is saved in one file as a RAR file to make the size of the download smaller.

As long as you have followed the instructions and installed the software in the first step it is simply a matter of clicking on the downloaded music file and it will open a box within the program... such as WinRAR.   You can then place the files wherever you wish on your computer.

From there you can do several things such as unpack the entire archive to be able to transfer it to your hard drive, then a CD or MP3 player or simply play through your computer speakers.

Dark Tan - After Dark.... Tan

During the rage of the Disco days in Australia, Dark Tan were very popular.

This is their vinyl LP, released on the Laser Records label in 1980.

Engineers were Alex Duyser and Peter Hood.

The recordings for this album were done between January 1978 and March 1980.

There is a great review on this band on the cleavagedownunder website... click the link to open the site.

Globos - The Beat Goes On (single)

The Globos were a musical comedy cabaret group formed in Melbourne in 1980 by  Mark Trevorrow.... famously known as Bob Downe and Wendy De Waal.

The Beat Goes On,  is the second single release for The Globos..

Their first single was Tintarella Di Luna and was featured many times on Countdown. In fact, Mark and Wendy hosted the Countdown show on 2 occasions.

The group mimed old records and commercials, in a loving and hilarious recreation of early Australian TV pop shows, and then recorded and mimed their own material.

Below is a great clip from the old Simon Townsend's Wonder World with Jono Coleman as the reporter.  It's a classic... with Tintarella Di Luna ----

For the first single the Globos were :-
Mark Trevorrow as Chip Wood
Wendy De Waal as Gloria
Jane Turner as Kay Trent
Kim Trenrow as Cookie Stanger
David Pledger as Murry The Man
Jane Markey as Donna-Sue Hart

For the second single Grete Mendoza replaced Jane Turner

Run Run

I found this single in my local Salvos store.

I have not been able to find out a single thing about this band at all.

The single was engineered in 1986 by John Ertler and produced by Murray Burns of MiSex fame.

I have spoken to John Ertler and he remembers recording the single but can't recall the band at all.

It's a 45 single and labelled Promotion Only - Not For Sale.

I am almost convinced that this single was never actually released.

If anyone has any further information on either this band or recording can you please contact me?

The members of Run Run were :-

Tony Gibson - Lead Vocals / Keyboards
Richard Fulton - Bass / Guitar / Vocals
Barry Hayes - Drums / Vocals

The tracks are : -

A/  Is This The Way
B/  Is This The Way (extended mix)

Group Therapy - Various Artists

Group Therapy was an Australian release on the Infinity label in the early 1970's.

It was released as a showcase album for the Infinity artists of the time.

The album  is extremely rare and the tracks are well worth a listen.

The cover is extremely worn but the album itself was in reasonable condition.

I don't think some of these tracks are available any longer other than on this album.

I am researching some of these bands but at this stage most of the links are pretty much obscure.   Information will appear here as it is located.

The tracks include :-

Hot Boogie Band by Heart'n Soul
Why by Timepiece
On This Day That I Die by Blackfeather
Start Of A New Day by Ray Brown & Moonstone
Goodbye Baby by The Aztecs
Free by Kahvas Jute
Gertrude St Blues by Chain
Wait For A Moment by Cleve

Vinyl rip / LP Covers scans included / 320kbps MP3 format

Sorry about the size of the LP scans.. I forgot to do a resize before I uploaded.

Bengal Tigers - Metal Fetish

Pioneering Melbourne Metal band Bengal Tigers featuring frontman Gordon Heald, guitarist Barney Fakhouri, bass player Steve Tyler and drummer Mick Egan have a long and honourable past being one of the first Australian Heavy Metal bands to be signed by a major label.

Bengal Tigers first release would be the 'Metal Fetish' EP for the major Mushroom Records.

This EP would also be released in the UK as a mini album by the Heavy Metal label.

With a shuffle of band members after guitarist Barney departed the band for a while the Bengal Tigers resurrecting themselves in 1989 with new guitarist Yuri Linzew in tow.
Nothing was recorded with Linzew who defected from Melbourne glam kings Axatak.
Foundation member Barney reclaimed his six string position in Bengal Tigers in 1992.

Bengal Tigers released a further EP in 1995 called Pain Clinic.

Another EP, In One Ear, followed in November of 1997 before a third effort in 1998 would be headed by a cover version of the Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right  (To Party).

1998 would see the Bengal Tigers release their first long play album called In The Blood.
The band's material still fetches a mighty price in rarity stakes on internet sites around the world.

Information above sourced from the Bengal Tigers MySpace page

Bengal Tigers style has been compared to that of European metal bands like the Scorpions and Judas Priest.

Main band members were :-

Gordon Heald - Vocals
Barney Faroukh - Guitar
James R. Power - Bass
Mick Egan - Drums

Former and past members were :-

Yuri Linzew - Guitar (Ex - Axatak) - 1989 - 1992
Keath Peter-Budge - Guitar - 1989 - 1999
Steve Tyler - Bass - 1979 - 1983

Tracks on this EP are :-

Break And Bend
Heavin'
Got To Deliver
Fallen Idol
Pounding Energy

Dogs On The Bonnet - Too Stout For Groupies

Well, ain't this one a 'lil beauty?

The band's... Dogs On The Bonnet... the album's Too Stout For Groupies.

Once again another 'lil gem that I can't find much info for.

This band hails from the Kimberley Region of Western Australia.

They were popular in Broome, Derby and Fitzroy Crossing!

The album was produced and recorded at Troppo Sound in Broome, WA in 1994.

Personally I love the album... it's good fun music.

You have :-

Bill Chidgzey on guitar, vocals and harmonica
Jake Zahl on guitar and vocals
Pete (3rd Degree) Burns on bass and backup vocals
Evan (Doopa) Briers on drums and extra percussion

The tracks include :-

Let Me See You Smile
This Is Not The Promised Land
Sitting Here Watchin You
Two Sisters
Fitzroy Delta
Frankies Song
In Cider Dream
Won't Be Turning Back
Neutron Bomb
Fishin Blues
Never Let Them Go
Shore (ly ya can't be serious)

What little I have found out about the band members is...

Bill Chidgzey is said to be Perth's most flexible and hard working entertainer.
After Dogs On The Bonnet, Bill went on to form popular Perth band, Men And Their Sheds.
To quote his bio on Slim Jim Enterprises...
Bill solo style is uniquely Australian with a focus on interaction and a good time. Bill has residencies at several popular venues and covers artists ranging from Johnny Cash to Green Day and all points between.

Jake Zahl spent 7 years the Campaign Manager for Clean Up The Kimberley and is on the Campaign Team for Clean Up Australia.

With his wife Iggy Zahl, Jake runs Hotland Advertising and Promotion.

Unfortunately I have been unable to locate any information on either Pete (3rd degree) Burns or Evan (Doopa) Briers

Rick Price - Tamborine Mountain

Tamborine Mountain was Australian singer / songwriter Rick Price's second album and was released in 1995.

It has long been deleted from catalogues and is now unavailable.

Rick already had three ARIA nominations and a score of Australian Music Awards under his belt.

The album achieved platinum sales status.

It was Rick's most experimental album and its content reflected an introspective view of his personal life.

With Tamborine Mountain Rick returned to his musical background of country / rhythm and blues but still maintained a commercial sound. The album featured strong melodies and arrangements.

In 2009 Rick relocated to the US.

I personally had just thought of Rick Price as a vocalist but after seeing some of the clips around of him I am totally blown away by his guitar work.

He has been touring as the support act for Tommy Emmanuel and also appearing as guest vocalist / guitarist in Tommy's own performances.

Below is an acoustic performance of Rick's hit single River Of Love by Tommy Emmanuel & Rick Price in a radio station studio in the US.

Musicians on the Tamborine Mountain album are :-
Rick Price
John Watson
Joe Creighton
Mark Punch
Ben Wilsch
T-Bone Wolk
Tina Arena
Tommy Emmanuel
Ray Pereira
Lindsay Field
Venetta Fields
Robert Parde
Laurence Maddy
Pam Reswick

Tracks on the Tamborine Mountain album are :-

To Be With You
River of Love
I Wanna Mean Something To You
You're Never Alone
Bridge Building Man
Strangers
Since I Met You
Foolish Heart
Trust Me This Is Love (with Tina Arena)
Sure Close To Lonely Tonight

Steve Hoy - Where I Come From (single)

It's been surprising just how little information I have been able to find about Australian guitarist / vocalist Steve Hoy.

One thing is that he certainly has paid his dues in the Australian rock industry.

In the 70's he was in Canberra band Saga with Steve Kilbey from The Church.

In the 80's he led Steve Hoy and The Hoy Boys (with Ross Hannaford on bass, Wayne Burt & Gunther Gorman), in the 90's The Steve Hoy Band and Steve Hoy and The Lost Millions.

Steve was a member of Melbourne band Hey Gringo in 1998.

He was also a member of the great Sydney band, The Hippo's in the 90's and 00's.

The following is a photo of Steve playing with The Hippos in Illawarra in 1993.

The following is a direct quote from Steve Hoy's MySpace page!!

''Described variously as “roots rock”, ”legendary”, ”highly talented” and “preposterous, vain and superficial”, Steve Hoy continues to continue.
Persistent rumours of a new collection of songs remain persistent.
Steve Hoy plugs and unplugs, sticks like glue, performs labours of lust, walks the line, sings glorious hymns and rolls away stones.''

Steve Hoy on MySpace

Steve is currently working as a musician and music teacher in Melbourne.

Steve's latest band listed on his MySpace profile is The BBQ Stoppers with the following members :-

Steve Hoy - guitar and vocals
Garrett Costigan - pedal steel guitar
Chris Stockley - guitar and mandolin
Stephen 'Irish' O'Prey - bass guitar
Scotty Martin - drums

I have been informed that there are 2 of Steve Hoy's albums... Life Next Door and Anticipation on the following links at Midoztouch.

Nathan Cavaleri - Jammin' with the Cats

Nathan Cavaleri was born 18th June 1982 and is an Australian blues-rock guitarist and former child actor.

This was his first album, Jammin' With The Cats, released in 1993.

At a very young age Nathan was diagnosed with leukaemia and he took up playing the guitar to take his mind off the disease. He is in remission and has been for many years.

His father got him a full sized guitar with a shaved neck to fit his small hands when he was just 6 years old.

He was only 9 years old when he played with Mark Knopfler, who described his playing as unbelievable.

Aged 13 he was lucky enough to be taken under the wing of BB King and eventually toured with him. He has also toured and played with Tommy Emmanuel.

He was also a featured player on the soundtrack for the movie Free Willy 2.

Nathan was also been invited to serve as a spokesman for Peavey Guitars.

In 2004 he formed a band called Dirty Skanks in which he wrote and arranged his own material, showcasing his unique techniques as he toured with the band.

The drummer of the Dirty Skanks is Col Hatchman, formerly with The Screaming Jets and recognised by the Guiness Book Of Records as the worlds loudest drummer.

Dirty Skanks has a CD released called Voluptuosity.

The Dirty Skanks website on Jaynie Records is HERE!!

Since the first half of 2010 he has been with his band, called Nat Col and the Kings, also formed with Col Hatchman.

In April 2010 Nathan had the pleasure of jamming along on stage with Deep Purple to their famous tune... Smoke On The Water.
